I read the other day that £6 per month is about the right amount to pay for broadband these days. Seeing as I'm paying nearly 15 quid for fairly basic Tiscali, I wondered if anyone could recommend something better.

I just need broadband on its own, and a basic one, as its mainly for web surfing.

Many thanks

If your phone is with BT and your net from tiscali then you will defo pay more. Switch to a phone/broadband package from the same company. Talktalk and Tiscali are supposed to be the best value at under £20 for both services. If you are a longstanding customer then you are probably stuck on an old tariff, phone them up and ask them to sort you out with a better deal.

If you have Sky TV then its only £5 for the basic package, its free if you take out sky talk.

I'm on the sky maximum package, 13mb unlimited for only a tenner.

Works for me.

Ive got sky too, only the middle package though, didnt need the unlimited downloads, and I can only get 4.5Mb/s download speed anyway

Got sky basic package with free sky + box, 16.50 per month gives me tv, phone and broadband, another £5 gives me free landline calls 24/7 to uk and even to my sister in OZ. The line rental is a further £11 from sky.Allthough they state there are download limits have never been restricted regardless of my downloading levels.

Just moving from virgin (national, not cable) which was (monthly) £21 inc 8mb BB and all national calls (anytime) (+12 line rental to British Telcon) to:-

Talk Talk - £24 a month for 8mb BB, all national (anytime) calls (including 0845/0870), all International land line (anytime) calls, Line rental (line will be taken over from BT) + free router. first months rental (6.49) for 3 months.

This change due to Virgin.nets inability to fix my email account that has been rejecting the majority of messages for 3 months (they say due to their on-going server migration project - acheduled to complete Nov 09).

We will have to see what their speed/service is like!

If you have an O2 mobile, O2 broadband is £7.50 a month for the cheapest. I've found their service reliable - the occasional brief drop, but never a prolonged outage. Real speeds are about 4 Mbps down, 0.9 up - from an 'up to 8 Mbps' in an urban area. The supplied router works fine.

(The mobile can be pay monthly or pay as you go, the latter you need to top up at least £15 a quarter, hard to imagine anyone who wouldn't.)
