I have just been reading that even using a browser in incognito mode along with a VPN doesn't ensure privacy.
Websites can use something called fingerprinting to identify your device. My basic understanding is that your browser sends lots of information about your computer to every website you visit and this enables that website to work out a unique signature for each device which lands on them. I have no idea how many websites do this.
