The copper part of our FTTC was laid in 1965 so 60 years and I have no doubts a lot much older still exists in the network.

Oh the network, yes. My childhood home was built in the 30s, and we had a phone. I don't know if the poles and wires were put up when the small estate was built, or a bit later, but that bit of the GPO network is still there.

I was referring to the time from when the rules relaxed and the home equipment changed, and people could easily run extension sockets around the house instead of having to sit in the hall.

BTW - if anybody has, or comes into, one of those phone benches which used to be popular, don't ever think "nobody wants those any more" and head for the dump.

I looked on there a 2 years ago when FIL passed, most of those where listed then, including the several with duplicate listings so I don't think they sell too many, we had a unit the same as the that listed at £1029, £881 - looks like standing above the inspection pit - and possibly £708 and that is still there. Equally the modern units (1960/70s) linger in charity shops for ages (FILs is still there at £10) and are now rejected.

Well, OK, but I'd be surprised if:

1) Someone would put them up for prices that were utterly unrealistic.

2) They would list them for sale for a long time, as listings cost money (I assume).

3) They would want furniture lying around their warehouse/storage for extended periods.

'Laid' suggests in the ground, which unless disturbed, tends to be better protected than over head. Ours is over-head, and has need repairs a few times, and a complete rewire and new drop wire, a few years ago.

Given the headline says "Make unlimited calls to UK landlines and mobiles with our optional Calls service. " and their FAQ also says they exclude "premium rate" numbers I'd guess they don't want to be bothered with per-minuite phone billing. As well as the technical complexity, IIRC there are some thorny regulatory requirements around phone billing and also the issue of "sticker shock" (what do you mean that call costs over a pound a minuite?!).

For UK landlines and mobiles, presumably they have decided that they can offer an unlimited service without too much risk of losing money but that would not apply if they included premium rate or international calls.
