BT Router 'locking'.

Hello All,

I have a BT Voyager 1500 router which is up and running nicely after some help here, thank you.

The only problem I have is that I have not been able to 'lock 'it so that other people cannot use it. I do not have vast quantities of money in any bank etc etc  , and I am not sure that I need to lock it ?? As you can tell by now I am a bit dim when it comes to pc 'stuff', sorry.
What is the harm in letting others use my router, I do play an online game and a friend said that someone else using my router could slow my connection down ??
When I go to the ip address 192.168.1.250 as instructed, to get to the options menu I am asked for a password, I was told by another friend  (yes I have 2 friends!!!!) to put in username/admin, and 'password' for the password,,,,, alas I fail to get into the options menu.
Sorry to harp on.
Thank you in advance for any help.

Ed.

The default credentials are admin and admin.

It depends what you mean by "lock", but I assume you mean protecting the wireless access.

There are a number of reasons why you should:

If the wireless access point is unprotected, anyone with a wireless laptop, for example, can access the gateway. This could simply mean that they can access the Internet free of charge, which, on the face of it may seem benign. However, imagine, in the extreme case, that they are downloading child pornography. If the authorities were monitoring the site being accessed, they could potentially trace the access back to the router, which is sited at your premises. They wouldn't necessarily know it wasn't you.

Also, the access point is a potential gateway to your PC(s). If you had some unprotected shares open, then these could be accessed.

Wireless access points should be protected with an encryption key and MAC filtering. Both have been covered on this forum.

I hope this helps.

Thank you very Igorian, after reading your post I see the point in protection.
I still cannot get to the options using admin/admin  .

This would suggest that the password has been changed at some point. The userguide is available from here, but as I said, the default username and password are both admin.

If the password has been changed, and you don't know what it is, you will probably have to reset the router back to factory defaults. This will mean reconfiguring it for Internet access.
