Hi all

I'm want to replace my old marble fireplace place with a solid oak and wood burner. I will try most things myself but my parents paid for someone to fit there's and the chimney ended up collapsing so I daren't do this job.
Anyway, are there people/tradesman out there who, given a picture of what I want, will come round and carry the job out from start to finish? Also I've heard of people wanting to buy these marble fireplaces so does anyone know where I might find someone? I'm in the Dorset area.

Many thanks

the chances are you cannot have flammable materials within around 18" off your burner so check first

Hi

Thanks for the reply. Everything should be good in the respect I just want to be able to give someone a picture and say make that happen.

so you have a fireplace over a metres wide or the stove will be set back far enough to give you 18" clearance??

yes you can get a carpenter to build a mantlepiece but in general they are far cheaper if you can find an off the shelve you like

Yeah, it's well over that measurement.

I can find the one I like off the shelve. But I'd want the entire fireplace doing. Surround putting up, the back plate ready for the wood burner. Is it a carpenter I need or a builder?

i would say you commission or choose a fireplace and get a builder to fit if the carpenter cannot fit it

It depends on what type of wood stove you are fitting.
Usually some digging out needed when changing from open fire to stove unless you want it jutting out into the room.

Hi norcon

Looking at the hole that's there for the open fire then I'm going to have to dig it out so its a nice square to tile. What is the best method of doing this?

Thanks

I did mine with an angle grinder with a concrete blade to cut into the chimney breast.
Then a concrete breaker.

Flue sections can be secured by drilling straight through it and inserting a re bar. Just in case it has any notions of landing in your living room.
Which is what I suspect happened at your parents.
