hello everyone

building a garage 5m by 5m. putting in 3 courses of bricks then building on 2x4 framework clad in 18 mm ply . walls 8 ft high. with possibly apex roof also with 18mm ply (4ftx8ft).
a few questions. what size of foundations would be adequate.
what size of timbers would be necessary for flat roof at what centers.
also would like to make large doors covering 5m front of garage. each door 8ftx8ft . 2 18mm osb boards in an angle iron frame. how could i support the gates without destroying framework of building, relatively cheaply.
thanks m

with a clear span of 5m, your best bet would be roof trusses as a cut roof would require 9 or 10" joists alone.

regards the doors, 8'x8' are pretty big and heavy.

you will need to have the frame well secured and very sturdy otherwise the frame will want to pull away from its housing, particularly when opening and closing. windy days, forget it.

you are going to have to build a 'goalpost' frame that will need to be concreted in at the bottom, or at least bolted to a very secure timber sub-structure.
8'x8' doors are very ambitious.

i suggest the foundations are dug down to virgin earth at a depth of at least 750mm. this will depend largely upon ground conditions. set the depth of concrete to a minimum of 225mm thick and 400mm wide.

thanks noseall.

Yeah i might well reduce down the size of the doors to a more manageable size. maybe 6x8 or even 5x8. try and get the weight down. Thinner ply possibly. and also use roof trusses.
do you or anyone know the size of a garage/shed before you have to ask planning permission.

If you go online to your local planning web site they should have all the relevant details as to size, location distances from public rights of way/highways, max height of ridge.

Failing that give them a call and they should post you the specs.
