hi to you all,

ive just laid the slab for a garage, 7.6m x 4.5m. i am considering doing a kit form first, ( timber frame ) then block work and rendering the outside, but wow it seems to be an exspensive way, but as we want to insulate it, it seems the only way, any of you have any rather cheaper suggestions, the timber alone is comming out at near £8oo, the profile roof another £700, i.m just a have a go diy-er, but i can see i'll be running out of money fast, :( cheers to you all and happy diy-ing :P

what were you expecting to pay for a structure that size? :?

even a simple garden shed that size would be pricey.

it seems as though you are treating the space as more than just a garage, what with two skins and insulation etc. if so, it ain't gonna turn out cheap.

either you want a garage or you don't. a single skin brick structure with a plain flat roof would be the least expensive option - if it is only to be a garage that is...........

yeah cheers for that, it was at first just to be a garage, then more of a storage facility, so i guess after having a few quotes, and seeing the size of the garage slowly grown from our original plan, it is now quite a size, but get this, :? the missus, is still not sure its big enough, geeeze, well the slab is down now so the size it is now, is staying, and she'll just have to cough up and get me the timber i need to finnish the job, :D but will just keep phoning round to find the best deals, and as for brick work, well a good idea, but that wouldnt go down too well up here, isle of skye is much more the timber frame/blockwork/ and rendering, so i guess its pay out time. grrr no holidays this year

Do the blockwork outer first, the internal stud wall can be done later when you can afford it. Could even save on the roof by putting up el-cheapo shed felt as a temporary solution.

Having taken my advice you'll probably now have enough left over for a weekend in Blackpool. In November.

awesome idea, cheers deluks. not so sure the gaffa will go with that idea, but i'll put it to her when she gets home from work,  blackpool, mmm not sure i been there. :D

I've just costed out replacing my old timber and asbestos garage with a new one and that comes to £1500.
It's not as big as yours, 16x10 foot, timber framed with weatherboarding , mineral felt roof and internal lining.
This does not include the base which is already there so I think that your costings are about right, unless of course I have got mine wrong.

anobium, yeah i think that sounds about right, i been running through some costs and i think the main shock has been that we have made the garage larger than first planned, ( several times ) and so hence the extra in total cost, but i am looking at the last comment made, and as we have the blocks for the garage, i am considering doing the blockwork first as suggested, and do the additional inner work at a later date, though i want to understand how many other problems it will cause by doing it this way, ( i.e tying the blocks to the kit ) the roof trusses are also here ready, and again i could put an alternative roof on for now, or put the right roof on now and just leave the inner kit till we save a little more. not being a builder i will have to give it some thought, but hey im glad you got yours sorted, :)
