I am having a garage conversion and have been given different advice by different builders! One says that it will be ok having a step down from the house into the new room, open the door from the house and an 8 inch drop to the new room. While the other one says that building regs won't allow any drop at all. Which one is right?

ask your local bco, since it is they who will inspect it, not us

cor if you have an 8" step down into garage conversion what is the floor level difference at the moment?

single steps used to be a no-no (is the one who says no step an old boy?)

but now they ok

is there any other factor that the buiders are thinking about? say "you cant have a step because.....maybe....insulation required to floor" or is it you cant have a step cos steps in doorways are wrong?

An 8" drop sounds huge. Irrespective of BRs don't you anticipate that being (a) impractical and (b) unsafe?

I'm not up to date but used to be 100mm drop because of petrol spillage etc.

masona, the 8" drop will be into a room that used to be a garage, not into a garage.

u must have a step in for safety reasons, bldg regs will require it........check with em if u dont believe me.

put in a landing, the length of it must be same as the width of ur doorway, & then put in one step down........u can make a feature of it if u want

indeed why?
Would be some pretty strange houses if we had to have steps into each different room.
