Can anyone help? We are having french doors installed and need to build some steps down to the decking. Is there a minimum/maximum depth requirement for the first step - ie stepping out from the door to the first step? Thanks.
i always find the first step out of the door needs to be quite high as you are stepping over a fairly high threshold. if you are carrying stuff and can't see the step, you need reassurance that when you lift your foot over that tall-ish plastic upstand, that there is a step waiting for your foot.
the last thing you need is to be stepping down immediately!
so all you need to do is work out an even amount of steps from the first step to the finished level. i would say a minimum of 12" of going with say 6" of rise for each step would be ok for an external tread pattern.
450mmx450mm slabs make for a good size step if your 'going' space can afford them.
bear in mind, that in winter snow and ice can be a factor so don't make the steps to squat.
