Bungalow: do I need scaffolding to put in a flue liner?

The rule for the HSE is

A ladder is for access only UNLESS for short periods and then 3 points of contact must be made at all times (you can use a harness as one so you can use your hands)

Steps/mobile scallfold/full scaffold/MEWP/Cherry picker/podiums/hop uns can be used to work from providing operators have the correct tickets.

In real life I would be on a cat ladder

Doing any job is about weighing up the risks and doing what you feel happy with. Can't say that I would ever use scaffolding, etc on a bungalow with a low/med pitch.

If I did insist on scaffolding where it's not really necessary, then the job would probably go to someone who is cheaper because they're not using any.

Rule book is definitely for guidance only - never obeyance. For us plumbers anyway! 8)

To all GSRs - don't forget your sun block on those roofs at this time of year.

Just so your awear under the Heath and safety act. You are employing contractors, if you don't supply a scaffold you "could" be prosecuted
