I've increased the size of the rabbet in my old timber windows so that I can now fit a double glazed unit. The instructions say to bed the unit in 1-1.5mm of butyl OR low modus silicon. All searches online seem not to differentiate between them.
1. What, exactly, is the difference.
2. What is better or what are the pros and cons of one over the other.
3. Should the timber (which is now bare wood) be primed first and if so, is there any preference for oil or water based primer. Silfix U9 instructions say to "apply primer if required" whilst Hodgson's butyl 66 compound says to use their timber sealer.
Thanks
