buzzing noise from flourescent ceiling light

we have a round flourescent tube ceiling light at each end of our lounge, one of them is making a buzzing noise, its been doing this for about a year and its really annoying, sometimes it gets so loud i can hear it from upstairs! any one know whats causing it? thanks. [/b]

it will be the choke as they age the laminations loosen and vibrate
 
thanks for a speedy reply pte, i dont know what the choke is but will mention this to hubby in the morning and see if he can maybe look at it. is it dangerous do you think, thanks again. jane :)
 
Not necessarily dangerous, many chokes make a quiet humming sound and that is normal.

But loud buzzing is a sign that that choke is getting old and may be prone to failure so replacement is a good option.

The choke is a coil that controls the amount of electricity that the lamp uses. If the light fitting is one you want to keep then it is sometimes possible to change the choke in the fitting for a new one. But that does require some specialist knowledge to get the right type of choke for the light fitting.

Or replace it with an electronic ballast, which will give better, more controlled starting and silent running, but again it must be sized and wired correctly.
