my dad says his boiler has this on and it means his boiler BOULTER is good and recongnized as a top quality product and is given this "award"
...
I "thought" it was a special license that manufacturers have to be given to produce such products... i.e. gas boilers can potentially kill and thus have to be specially licensed manufacturers that produce them...??

is he right?

just ive seen this "By Appointment HM Queen" thing on a few hardware products

thanks

i thought it meant that the manufacturer has supplied products to the queen or her estate - and she then grants approval for the supplier to say so.

doesn't mean they're any good or even good value.

Well there is the ROYAL WARRANT which it seems to be , but he's under the impression that this implies that it is a quality product? the wiki says "Royal warrants of appointment have been issued for centuries to those who supply goods or services to a royal court or certain royal personages. The warrant enables the supplier to advertise the fact that they supply to the royal family"

he said its an award they give out - like OBE etc but to companys... its not that ... it doesnt imply that its quality BUT his says "Boulton boilers are by appointment to her maj the queen elizabeth 2ndfor their services to quality boiler manufacture"

Boulter boilers do not exist anymore.

They were taken over by Buderus.

Buderus were taken over by Bosch.

The Boulter factory in Ipswich was closed and is now a housing estate.

Worcester-Bosch now produce oilers for the UK market in Clay Cross - the Boulter brand had a lot of followers in East Anglia (probably all relations) so Worcester kept the old Boulter 'Camray' product designation on their horizontal firing oilers in an attempt to trade on the goodwill.

Thomas Crapper also had a royal warrant - look where it got him

They have failed. The boilers produced by WB under the Camray name are to be avoided at all costs. Servicing is a nightmare.

Yes they are a little beauty to service.

Not much fun to fit either.

However, they get a 5yr warranty when put in by accredited installers.

I'm not sure which units will last longer, but the Grant is nicer to work on, without a doubt.

factory buildings are still there mate, there is another business in there.

as for the 'by royal appointment' thing, i worked on andrew and fergies house at sunningdale, the company i worked for got the seal and put it on all the vans. makita rep came to the site, a few days later a container load of makita tools arrived on site, they got the seal as well. ive still got several old makita 'by royal appointment' bits in the garage. there wasnt much left in the container by the end on the job.

From what I gleened from my last visit to the Ipswich factory, prior to Boulter's regrettable demise, the Royal Warrant was awarded after Pathfinder models were installed at Sandringham.

Spot on Tibbot I was about to say that!!
The Old Boulter factory is now a Business Centre a lot of the Boulter staff ended up at Grant in Devizes, (smart move there!)

I was born in Ipswich. Not that thats any more relevant.

Valley Road if anyone knows where that is, number 104 if I remember rightly.

Tony

Which is rather ironic as the castings were imported and the burners were Riello.
