Cable run through void in RSJ..

So, considering t&e has mechanical protection in the form of it's exterior sheath and there's no sharp edges on the RSJ it enters and runs along side of; having seen this during a PIR, would you code it and what regulation would it contravene?

BTW, I'm not condoning the idea of good practice. I wouldn't dream of not inserting grommets into a backbox even though they're not required under BS7671 if there's a lack of sharp edges.

Hope you and your family also have a Merry Christmas :)

lack of support or fixings? ( how do you clip to a steel I beam? )

It might be running horizontally. I agree, you can't fix the cable but then again you wouldn't rip all the boards up on the first floor of a house to fix every last clip to nearby joists.

Not being an electrician I am not qualified to carry out a PIR so am unable to answer your question, I'll leave that to the experts.

There are clips you can purchase just for this type of situation.

(Hope you've finished that painting!  )

You can also use girder clips but neither would be any good if the RSJ is already enclosed.

I assume this is a standard I beam, boxed in. You would not need to drill the beam to run a cable, you would just run it with the beam, in the boxing.

Box beams are used in construction, but I beams are far more common in dwellings which are predominantly brick and block.

I would never drill a beam without express permission of a structural engineer either - 99% of the time you would find an alternative route anyway.
