CEGB standard is for all numbering to read away from the terminal, regardless of what that does to orientation, or your neck.

That's an old standard of course.

Generally you will see this type of multi core numbered or plain cabling in commercial use such as panel wiring where multi cores are required

Presumably you mean field wiring and not panel wiring?
