Can someone please tell me why my boiler fires up without being asked. It will fire up but the motorised valves are closed, then it shuts down because it cannot pump the water through system.

Motorised valves have an internal microswitch which when the valve winds fully open is operated. This microswitch then controls the boiler. Occasionally a valve can close, but the microswitch sticks in the 'on' position and gives the symptoms you describe.

It's not too difficult to trace, if you have a multimeter and can use it safely. With the heating and hot water set to 'off', check the switched live is still present at the boiler and if it is, check to see if it is coming from one of the motorised valves.

Frost protection systems can be another cause (if your boiler has an internal frost stat fitted). This is less likely, because it's quite warm at the moment so shouldn't be coming on anyway. Any external frost protection system would still operate the motorised valve(s).

Good morning,

I have the exact same symptoms with the same model of boiler. I had put it down to the nest thermostat I had put in firing it up. Mine is firing for about 6 minutes every hour. Would this explain why my oil levels are lower than I would have thought if this is burning for an extra 2 hours every day?

Your problem will be with the controls. Check your wiring and settings. 6 mins per hour suggests the boiler is always switched on.

Afternoon,

Thanks for the reply. I believe that's its all wired correctly as we just changed the programmer for the nest heat link and the call for heat and call for water are working as they should. The boiler is defo not keeping the water hot constant anyway and the pump is not making a noise when it does these 2 x 3 min bursts every hour. It is something to double check though since you said it. Any easy way to check?
