Can any-one help

My Volvo 460 idles allright, but when I put my foot on the accelerator the rev counter only goes up to about 2/3 thousand revs then the engine will spluter, it sounds like its sucking in air, It will drive, but only at low revs, theres no acceleration it feels like the engine want to die, It will hardly make it up a slight incline, any-one help me its doing my head in, Iv got the Haynes manual, someone mentioned it could be my air flow sensor but cant find a reference to one in the manual, any help would be greatfully appreciated

have you checked the air filter is not clogged.take it out and try.next if it has an intercooler pipe check its not collapsing under accelleration
