Not too skilled in DIY I am afraid! Looking for an engineer but am wary of 'cowboys' and hoping for a recommednation from this site, any advice??

Evidently not. If you go to the Corgi site you can look up all the Corgi registered engineers in your area and start phoning around. The ones who don't need to advertise in Yellow Pages, etc. are probably the better ones!
