hi there,

going up my stairs there is a solid board under the hand rail instead of bannisters. i really don't like the look of it so i thought about taking it out and putting bannisters in there instead so the hall feels more open.

trouble is the wood at the base of the board is really narrow, like an inch or so. which is too narrow for any bannisters i've ever seen.

just wondering if there's any way around this. are there such things as narrow bannisters or perhaps a way of widening the base?

any ideas?

cheers

Richard Burbridge -- do the lot at a price  BUT I did mine and then Briwaxed them ............brilliant ,classy look to the galleried landing I`ve got

affix a string cap

which is basicly an "H"shaped bit of wood that slips over the string[stairs side bit]and your spindles fit into the groove in the top

You need to fit a base rail to the top of the stair stringer, the spindles then fit between this & the underside of the handrail. If you look here, it may help explain a bit more about what you need.

I've used this company, the products are good quality & competitively priced; they will also deliver if you want.
