Can I have a new combi boiler and keep my hot water cylinder

I don't want a gravity fed system.

I want to lose the storage tank in the loft.
I'd like mains pressure hot and cold water. (Or as close to it as possible)
I'd like a hot water backup (in case the boiler breaks down on Christmas eve)
I want the boiler to heat my radiators.

Surely there is a simple solution to this?

Sorry it's getting a little confused I saw the gravity bit without reading the rest of the thread

You need a combination thermal store it will do what you want, it's vented, gives mains pressure hot water with no storeage in the roof space.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what all these bits of kit are called as it's pretty new to me. I'm used to a simple combi doing everything on demand.

Is a "Combination Thermal Store" effectively a special kind of hot water cylinder that I would keep in my airing cupboard?

Would it be heated indirectly by the boiler most of the time, but if the boiler were to break down, an immersion heater could take over and provide hot water if necessary?

Solution : "System boiler" and "Combination Thermal Store"?

Yes to all of your questions.

Hooray! Thanks ajstoneservices and all the other guys for a useful discussion.

A simple solution and I understand it. That's just what I wanted.

I'm off to have a cup of tea. My head hurts. :D

Under the "Vented mains pressure system" table it states : No loft tanks - space saving

you cannot put mains pressure into a vented system, it would just overflow!

Never assume everything you read is correct !

Err, actually you can if the vented cylinder has a mains pressure DHW heat exchanger fitted then it wont overflow either.

Thanks for the link KevPlumb.

I've done a little bit of googling and there don't appear to be that many heat store manufacturers.

I appreciate the suggestion. ;)

Kingspans Range, Albion, Copperform and Manco cylinders have a thermal store range, as do Telford and RM.

Thanks I'll check them out.

I'm guessing there isn't much to go wrong with these so the one with the longest warranty should probably win?

Irrelevant really, but I don't think I would like to heat a thermal store via an immersion heater, unless I had very deep pockets.

Thermal stores are ideal for solar panels as an add on now or in the future.

I'm not proposing to maintain the thermal store using an immersion heater.
That's just a backup in case the boiler were to break down.

I will get an "indirect" version that will be heated via our gas boiler.
;)
