Can I remove water meter

When I moved into my house 25 years ago there was a digital water meter , for approx 10 years my water charges were determined by that , however it stopped working , after a few letters from Severn Trent asking to come and replace it ( bearing in mind this was 15 years ago ) , they stopped contacting me and since then have charged me standard rates without question , the meter sticks out at the back of the washing machine void which means I cant push new washing machine in without it sticking out by approx 3 inches , would anyone notice if I took it out and bypassed it?
