Hi all

Can I replace a 7.5kw electric shower with a 8.5kw shower?

There are two electric showers in the house protected by a separate unit which contains two 32amp circuit breakers. The cable is 10mm and the 'run' is approx 10 metres. Would I need to change one of the 32amp circuit breakers?

8.5 Kw at 240 volts draws ( 85000 / 240 ) amps

That is 35.42 amps

( If the shower is rated 8.5 Kw at 230 volts then it is 36.95 amps )

Yes you would need to change the relevant MCB

As to the cable being suitable. Some one else can answer that .

If you have to ask the question about changing the MCB then I suspect your knowledge is not yet adequate for the task of change the shower safely.

You need to ask more questions.

How is the separate unit connected to the main consumer unit?
What size cables are used to make this connection?

The 10mm cable is for one or both of the showers?
What is the maximum load of you separate unit?
What is the maximum load of the your Consumer Unit?
What is the size of the service fuse?
What is the kw rating of the other shower?

Look at the nominal size here

for 10mm you would normally have stranded conductors for line,neutral and earth.

for 6mm cable you would normally have stranded conductors for line and neutral only - earth would normally be 2.5mm single core.

Sorry riveralt, it was a question for the OP to confirm it wasn't 4mm² or 6mm² rather than '10mm'.
