My house, c1890 has newish timber windows with slim double glazing. Throughout are timber beads which just look awful. They're thick, proud of the frame, make the frame look too wide and are obvious from across the street! I can't afford new windows, is there any reason I can't remove the beading and replace with putty?

Any beading/finish needs to cover and protect the edge of the double glazed units from UV.
Do not block drainage & ventilation gaps around or under the units
Do not use Linsead putty as that will break down the double glazed units

Other than that it maybe possible
