Can I take these pieces of wood out...

As above really ,these pieces used to hold the water tank up just checking its ok to whizz them out.See pics.

They are there to stop the roof from bowing inward with heavy snow.

Looking at the way they have been fixed i would say yes you can remove them.

Had they been bolted to the rafters and structurally connected to the purlin i would have said they had a dual purpose in supporting the tank as well as the roof.

Yes. They are only pinned on. The weight is taken by the purlin.

they were for tank stand... the purlin stops the sag and this is propped up with a strut oneside and some brickwork the other.. take them out.
