Can I use battens to put my my engineered floorboards on ?

...........and what are you going to put in between them ?

How thick is your flooring ?

onto concerete slab. I was thinking of filling the void with some insulation. I thought that I would let the 'old' but dry floor breathe whilst allowing sufficent gap between the floor and the boards. Throught about putting a DPM under the battens but a little worried about any damp being moved to the walls and creating a problem there that I dont have now.

14mm is not load-bearing so therefore cannot be installed directly onto joists or battens without any decent support.
Your boards have to be at least 18mm

Bugger. Is there an underlay that is capable of taking a load and which is think enough to remove a slight flooring variation. Preferably one which can be but down on a concrete screed

PIR insulation board might work here as you want to insulate anyway and it is pretty tough. Would be necessary to get very good match batten/PIR height otherwise flex might destroy the floor.

I am not certain about this, so wait for one of the professionals to comment/

Thanks Mountainwalker - all advise greatfully received. Ive been looking at Kingspan Kooltherm Floorboard (www.insulation.kingspan.com/uk/k3.htm). This seems like it might do the trick ?

how big are the variations maybe consider self leveling the floor first.

Chappers - They're not too bad and I have thought about leveling. With this floor board from kingspan I thought I might be able to pack in areas that need leveling ?

Yeap - thought about ply, my only fear in the back of my mind is this little damp issue - thats why I thought of the kingspan. The specific product is water resistant but has the same properties of plywood i.e. is structural. Its also an insulation. Thanks for your reply though
