Can I use laminate upstand behind an electric hob?

Hi

I know you can't use laminate upstand behind a gas hob, but can you run upstand behind an electric hob?

Like everyone else I have very uneven walls - and the upstand will cover up nicely.

Would it not be better to level out with plaster then either tile or splash back.
