can someone tell me what this is

I pulled out the sofa this morning to clean and found these wires..does anyone know what they are for..they must have been installed by the previous owner

Those look like cable TV connections, do you have cable tv or broadband from Virgin?

no not at the moment

In that case the house will have at some point had cable TV or broadband from Virgin, they are nothing to worry about. You may well find similar connections elsewhere in the house near to your TV or where a computer once was. Like i say nothing to worry about, just push the sofa back and forget about them.

Just looks like a passive TV splitter to me - Standard terrestrial distribution.

If its a connected NTL/Virgin cable then you can connect your TV to it and may get a few extra channels if you are lucky.
Or if you can get hold of an old box thats been "modified" thats a different option but cant say too much bout that.
