I have found a wire coming out the wall of my Kitchen and accross the top of the frame for my gate in to my shed.

This must have been done by the previous owner, how do i tell if it is live or not and how do i work out what it should supply i.e. is it for lighting or for a socket?

I have no clue about electrics so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

1) treat it as live and dangerous until you know otherwise

2) it is not run in a safe way so don't try to use it. From what you describe I suspect it is an amateurish bit of work and may have other dangerouss aspects to it as the person who did it probably didn't know and/or care how to do it properly.

3) follow its route into the house and see what it is connected to. It might come off the back of a socket, or a light fitting, or it might go into the CU (consumer unit, fuseboard).

When you have discovered where it goes in the house, come back with some pics and we will probably be able to tell you how to disconnect it safely.

Outdoor circuits are particularly dangerous, and there are legal controls on their installation which I won't bore you with just now.
