I have recently read a post from a lady who's family lived and worked in Malaysia prior to the downfall of Singapore, it is well documented the events that led to the surrender, but she put a personal note to it.

IMO opinion our politicians are young kids that appear to be blind to what is happening now, they obviously don't realize how other nations want to rise up and rule the world, when it happens it will be to late AGAIN!

I don't have a problem with civilized nations, we beat Germany twice at its national sport, though you wouldn't believe it, the Japanese of today is not the Japanese of the 40s, we've liberated France twice, the Dutch have always been good friends, it's the countries that are still living in the dark ages and having civil wars amongst themselves.

What? You mean that they want to emulate what Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Holland, et al did in their historical development?

The ignominy of it!

Hello Joe, how are things going with the new alias?

You do have a valid point however, history should teach us not to meddle in the affairs of other volatile nations.

Your response suggests that you think that there was some volatility prior to our meddling. Any proof of this?

Any proof that our meddling has reduced any volatility, if there was any?

If we're talking about the same thing Joe they have been at each others throats from before biblical times, long before King Richard and his merry men went off on their crusades..

In our infancy after we had been raped and pillaged by the Vikings and then became part of the Roman empire we set out to discover the rest of the world, to trade, force our religion on them, a lot of countries benefited from our empire, we mainly fought the Germans and Boers, I personally have not benefited from our ransacking the wealth from various nations, I don't believe in god or any of his other aliases and don't want them building another mosque in Bristol either, we educated people around the world, we dragged them out of the dark ages, what does Mohammed or Allah got that I want or need???

The cynic in me would suggest that all they are interested in is their own well-being. Some naive people still think that they're here to run the country for the benefit of the public.

I, too, believe that to be true. Yes, we benefited from the products of those countries, such as diamonds from South Africa to take an extreme example. However, it was not all one-sided. They benefited from our superior technology, enterprise and financial expertise.

Look at India now, to take one example. They have one of the most extensive railway systems in the world which, incidentally, seems to be a damned sight more reliable than our own. Moreover, I firmly expect them to overtake us when we descend into third-world status in the foreseeable future. Would they have achieved all this without our input?

What does Moh or Allah have that we need? Sharia law? Keeping our women under the thumb? (Don't tell my first wife I said that! )

Ahh Zimbabwe, Up until some years ago, it was known as the bread basket of South Africa. Look what's happened since the European settlers have left. Mugabe gave the farms to his cronies, who know nothing of farming, nothing of business. They've run them into the ground. Now tell me who's benefited from the absence of the European settlers driven out of that country? And just who is suffering now ( and not because of years of oppression)

Disco Dancer seems to be one of those typical lefties who live in a permanent state of guilt about our Empire, blaming the white man for their downfall.

In truth, the natives are able to do little for themselves and the only African countries that have a modern infrastructure are the ones that the white man dragged out of the dark ages. Of course, there are many African countries that never benefitted from the presence of the white man. They are still in the dark ages and always will be, unless the white man (or at present, the yellow man) drags them out of it. The natives still have their hands out for us to feed them though.

Disco is just another agitator, who constantly moans about all that was acquired during Empire but still benefits from it today. Probably never even been to Africa, but knows it all and twists the truth, eg. blaming our colonial involvement in Zimbabwe for their present day troubles. Well for a fact, there was food and jobs for the natives then, but a trypical African despot has taken charge and shot the goose that laid the golden eggs. Mugabe is the sole reason that Zimbabwe now suffers, not colonial rule.

I spent three years in Singapore in the late 60s, the Malay people were glad of our occupation, especially having eventually pushed the Japanese back. They made a lot of money from us..

Then when you've read a little more, perhaps you can respond with a more informed point of view.

And I ask again,,, Who's suffering and being oppressed in present day Zimbabwe,, and by whom ?

Forget history Joe. We can't go back and change the past. Neither should we dwell on what happened a long time ago. You strike me as one of these Lefty apologists, who continually feels the need to apologise for anything that happened centuries ago. No doubt, if you were Jewish, you'd be apologising for the crucifixion. I'm surprised your not apologising for the bloody crusades in the 11th - 13th centuries .

Interesting chronology :D

What, you mean these crusades?
"The Crusades were religious conflicts /..../ conducted under the sanction of the Latin Catholic Church. ....../.......There followed a further six major Crusades against Muslim territories in the east and numerous minor ones as part of an intermittent 200-year struggle for control of the Holy Land that ended in failure."..../
"The conduct of the Crusaders was shocking not only to modern sensibilities /........./The Crusaders pillaged the countries in transit, living off the land, /........./. The First Crusade resulted in the massacre of 8,000 Jews in the Rhineland in the first of Europe's pogroms. It also resulted in the slaughter of a purported 70,000 citizens in the fall of Jerusalem"

Well now you mention it.........

Is this an abject apology then Joe? Apologise all you like for things beyond your control. Have you thought of becoming an MP ? They seem to like apologising for the indiscretions of our ancestors (instead of apologising for getting the country into the state it's in)
