Hi all,

Sorry for the random and bizarre question, but I've found a set of patio doors that I really like that I can't find anywhere in wood or as internal doors and I was wondering if I could install patio doors internally? I haven't reached out to any suppliers/fitters yet but just wanted to get an idea if I'm being stupid (I usually am!).

I am planning to redo a stud wall that separates the home office from the hallway and replace it with a big set of sliding doors and the patio doors I have in mind would be perfect as they would provide much better sound insulation whilst I'm working. I appreciate the weight of the frame and doors might be a concern but I have a block wall on one side, ceiling joists above and a concrete floor below.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

There is no reason not to, external just means it is more waterproof than an internal door. Usually price helps one decide to buy an internal door for internal use, but if you like it enough, go for it

not exactly internal but

I built a lean too conservatory out of timber, using the existing 8 foot aluminium sliding patio door as the link between the house and wall,
Eventually the old door failed so I replaced it with a hardwood patio door (obviously intended to be outside)

It wasn't easy as the conservatory was only about 3M square and I had to build the frame inside the conservatory and get it into the hole.
Obviously, patio door frames are built normally in a back garden and simply pushed into place.
I had to negotiate angles etc to go from a horizontal to vertical plane while coping with walls and ceilings.

With hindsight I could maybe assembled it vertically, or even built the frame not according to the instructions, into the desired hole

Short answer - just check that it will physically be possible in a confined space or plan ahead

Thanks gents, thats really helpful. I'll update the thread as I get this going. I'm basically looking at having crittall style doors but will go for a powder coated aluminium finish instead and add the decorative trim myself. If I was to replace this in metal, it would cost £2000+
