Got a patch of garden that has really thick plants that come up every year - my wife wants it lawned- do I need to dig up the roots of the plants first?
No, you can use a suitable weed killer first, then wait 6 months or as recommended for the weed killer and then turf or seed it.
Alternatively turf it over, leave a year, then use a selective lawn weedkiller eg weedol to kill any unwanted weeds.
If you don't want to dig out the plants, that's fine.
Get someone else to do it.
Out they must be dug, and dug out thoroughly otherwise your lawn will be torn to pieces in no time.
Try not to use chemicals unless they're really stubborn.
Then you'll have to keep digging until the soil has the consistency of wholemeal flour. Sieved to a fine tilth. Levelled.
The amount of work put into preparing the ground will determine how good your lawn will look in a years time.
