can you make your own shingles?

I've seen sheds that are shingled and they look great but buying cedar ones is expensive. Has anyone made their own? Not neccesarily out of wood, you could cut up all sorts of things if you could be bothered... looking for a nicer way of roofing outbuildings inexpensively than felt or onduline..

what about feather edge boards. There is a shed near me that has a roof made of this and it appears water tight. Feather edge is quite cheap as well.

You can furnish a roof in all things water proof, but there are a couple of things to consider.

One is how will it look and secondly, how long will it last.

I suppose if it looks like a bears' erse but it only lasts a year, then happy days.
