We have a much loved vintage Ercol round table and chairs with a dark melamine top. Having changed the kitchen to be a little more modern in white we would like to change the table top to white washable durable surface. Do you think this could be done DIY or by a company-does anyone know a place to contact? I dont want a painted surface as i often use the tabletop for baking-it needs to be kitchen work top quality finish.

Rustin's at one time did a paintable melamine finish rather like their clear plastic coating, only white. Might be worth a punt giving them a ring. Alternatively Chestnut actually make a melamine lacquer (again clear) to which it might be possible to add an appropriate white pigment (e.g. titanium dioxide). Finally Ronseal do a Cupboard and Melamine Paint, although having never used it I don't kn ow how durable i is
