I've used 'spirit of salts' with amazing results. Just left in the toilet over night.

Harpic tablets in the black box are very good, dropped in the bowl and left overnight.
Have a look in the cistern. Is there a lot of limescale? Parazone Bleach Cistern blocks will slowly dissolve it, both in the cistern and in the pan. However if you ballcock filling pipe comes inthrough the bottom of the cistern, it will accelerate perishing of the rubber sealing washer.
It's not a scented or coloured block.
