Is something broken? I usually set my timer to heat up water but it isn't working. What's wrong? Timer need adjusting?

Considering the timer is hanging off the wall ,a loose connections another possibility. You need to get the timer sorted out.

I played with timer and turned all on. It came on but then switched off. Must be timer, right?

Sounds like a loose connection in the timer if it turns off or on when you wiggle the wires. Depends on how the wires are connected inside the timer whether it'll be a straightforward or difficult thing to fix. May or may not require soldering skills. Might just be that the wires are held into place with screws inside the timer, in which case it'd be easier to fix I think.

It doesn't have one as it's so old...without a multimeter and knowing how to use it safety you're just guessing.

I put this pen which lights up when electrics flow and it lit up on cable going into timer and doesn't light up on cable going out or emerson. Must be timer?
