My son's car is at the garage for a few weeks and he was looking to insure my car on his insurance so as to not affect mine. My insurer however said if he had an accident in my car on his insurance it would still affect mine.

Any thoughts or opinions on this?

Ask him to pay for you to add him to the insurance and cover any costs out increased premiums that he might cause you to incur

I can’t see that. If he was driving your car on your insurance and had an accident which claimed on your policy, yes, it would affect your policy.

If I was driving your car for example on my policy and had an accident, it would be my policy that any claim would be against. Get your son to ask HIS insurer. BTW, is he fully comp and has driving other cars on his policy? If so, he needs to do nothing although he would only have third party cover.

I agree it's frustrating but your insurance company are the ones that make the rules.
I think he'd have problems anyway when he puts on his insurance application that he's not the owner or registered keeper of you car, and even worse if it's not kept at his home address.
Cheaper to have him as a named driver and tell him to be careful .. or else!

Thanks mottie, no they didn't mean if he was a named driver on mine. He is fully comp but doesn't have insurance to cover other vehicles as only 22 in age.

A while ago, I lent our spare car to our daughter. She was on her husbands policy as a named driver. They just added my car temporarily to their policy and she could then drive it. I think it cost her around £30 for the week. It was all done online. Most insurers do it nowdays,
