How much effort is it to re-carpet my spiral wooden staircase in the same way its done now - pics below.

Is the stiching around the edges done by hand or machine?

Could new carpet be glued into place to save sewing a join underneath?

Typically how much would I expect to pay a carpet fitter for this (11 runs in total).

Thanks

Hi, the carpet fitter is going to really enjoy that job (not!)

Answers...

- alot of effort compared to standard stairs
- machine (see below)
- join is not "sewn" its looks like a stapled butt joint (and a very nice job they made of it too)
- costs vary dependant on area, but a least £5 per stair pad for fitting, plus the cost of the carpet, plus £? per metre for wipping. - overall a lot more expensive than normal standard stairs.

Basically, a good estimator should pre-plan this job really carefully!
It is unlikely you will get it fitted in one stage, more likely 2 or 3 as below:
1/ estimator will measure up and work out how much carpet you need.
2/ carpet will be cut into component but slightly oversized pieces (usually offsite)
3/ fitter will (onsite) trim pieces to exact size
4/ pieces will be wipped (bound) by machine (glorified sewing machine)
5/fitter will return and finish installation.

Be wary of anyone suggesting it should be done any other way - your staicase has several twisters (triangular shaped) and all of these will need to be shaped onsite and wipped seperately (if you cut through it, it will fray)

Thanks lymmranger for the comprehensive reply.

Uhhhmmm .. I might keep whats there then!

My choices were:

Due buidling work adjoining rooms to the stairs need re-flooring ... wanted to keep it consistent ...

1) Re carpet the whole of that floor (basement area) including stairs to match.
2) Put an engineered wood floor down and keep existing stair carpet.
3) Use some identical carpet from other rooms (that will have wood flooring) to match the stair carpet.

So I think option 1) is not an option ...

....you may struggle with option 3 too!

- the stairs are fixed to the floor so it will be a nightmare finishing the floor neatly, however I am not a wooden floor specialist, but some of the others on here will/may advise you better...

The pictire hides another steel floor upright behind the one visible.

The floor carpet around the staircase looks like it has been cut and sewed/joined - I had to look very closely to see it.

I think carelful planning of laying wooden flooring would not be an issue.

Typically how much would I expect to pay a carpet fitter to lay 40sq/m over two rooms with one join?

Hi do you still have the staircase?
could you please tell me the size of the treds (angled ones) just the 4 lengths will do unless you can measure the angles as well
