Ive had a set of trusty modtaps for 20+ years, great for patch board to socket (simple) testing all pins.
A telecoms oscillator and amp are useful for things data. Terminate a pair of wire say b/white to a socket module, and you then end up with something the sender unit can pulse down. The receiver unit can then do its job at the other end, as a cable id finder (not a cable tester).
i thought he said one end went it to a socket and the other end had the internet plug on. so i'm assuming an rj45 plate and plug? a patch lead is all he needs.
it would be impressive to get an unterminated cable into a port and get the light to come on
