hi guys as the work in my extension continues :? i will in about 2 months be needing the wall removed from the current kitchen to the dining room 2 meter long section of wall which is a cavity appox 60mm and brick both sides and the wall is on the gable end .ive got pictures of a friend whos had it done a few doors down and they installed 2 rsjs but when showed the pics to a friend at work to pass on to his brother whos a builder he said a catnic would be fine .why would you use a rsj other than a catnic please

Catnic off the shelf no probs, something like a CH50/125.
Thats a wide inner leaf lintel so wouldnt suit the 100 brick inner
Also the CGH is pretty small for a none load bearing 2m span.. as the max standard length is 2.1m it would be struggling just with brick loading..

Your friend has a couple of rsj's then chances are thats what you also need...
Firstly does the first floor joists span on to the area?
Secondly will the new extension roof also span onto the wall being removed?

Oh but to answer your questions, off the shelf Catnic lintels are predominantly designed for windows and external doors.. they rely alot on the bricks self arching effect and are cheaper and easier to install than steel beams..

hi static yes both the first floor joist and the joists of the flat roof does rest on the wall :( i had my hope a catnic would suit as it would allow the head room to be a reasonable height but it there not suitable rsj it is :(

Sorry sounds like a double steel beam situation (like your friends)..
At 2m span the beam depth shouldnt be huge..
