Yes, though I would refer to that as "insulating" it. I used thermal break in the same sense window manufacturers use, where the metal has an interstitial section of material with poor thermal conductivity

I suppose "can't" is a bit strong; anything can always be done, but in this case I'd assert "can't reasonably break the RSJ itself"

However, for this case it would be possible to e.g. attach a strip of plastic to a flange to act as a thermal break to the door frame.. It's not breaking the RSJ, but the RSJ+frame as a whole which is the goal - essentially what I recommended with the ply
