As i'm being bombarded with energy firms offering me free cavity wall insulation. Anybody know the answere to this? According to what i've been told. They only insulate the party wall between you and your neighbour. Well, my neighbour told me she has had that done a few years ago. Well, surely I don't need to get it done. Am i right?

Wrong forum but never mind.

No that is wrong, there is little heat loss between part walls becase effectively both sides of the wall are heated to the same - heat loss only occurs when there is a difference in temperature - such as between an outside wall and internally.

You do get some heat loss via party walls due to convection currents transfering heat upwards but the majority of heat lossed in your home will be via externally expossed walls.

The free offers will disapear at the end of the year as the CERT funding goes to repalced by Green Deal and ECO - take it now if you want it but make sure you get all external walls done.

I can tell you from experience that its well worth doing, my mothers bungalow had 18" of loft insulation which made very little difference to the heat loss but when she had the walls done it made a tremendous improvement to the inside temperature and the ammount of fuel used.
