Ceiling fan bearing type

The lower bearing is very noisy, I can feel the roughness when I spin the outer race by hand. The upper bearing is silent so can stay out.

Has anyone replaced a fan bearing and what type did you it? .... quite a variety to choose from online.

A good bearing factor should stock quality stuff like FAG, NTN, NSK or whatever.
The size code should be stamped on but the size can be determined with a vernier gauge.
I think I’d use a room sealed bearing in that situation, it looks like the grease has escaped on that one.

surely that bearing is not correct for an end load like a fan dangling on the motor shaft. It should be a thrust bearing.

Perhaps that's why it wore out and started to growl?

It's lost its lube and has been affected by humidity, more like - a standard deep groove bearing is fine in that situation.

My apologies, I confused myself. its actually the top bearing!

I'll inquire at the local factors and see what they stock.

I'll likely get one of these, they seem ideal. I also need to invest in a puller to get the old bearing off.

That'll do nicely - rubber seals are all you need, the metal shielded bearings are designated ZZ.
Often these bearings aren't too tight unless rust is an issue - you may get away with holding the bearing in a vice and tapping the commutator through.
Can I spy a snap ring holding it in place, or is that my eyesight?

Indeed, a snap ring with one end hanging out which shows the quality of build in the factory.

I've put the job aside for the time being until I get other ongoing sorted out first.
