    I’d do it like this:

What’s the fibre optics you mention?

Sure. So 5 battens? Can I make them thinner say 1 inch ( so use 1 x 2)?

Google star ceiling you will see what I mean. I need a void between the top of the batons and the old ceiling.

Of its one sheet surely just one in the middle would suffice?

If it's as out of level as you say, then you need furring strips not 2x1! Unless you are putting the ceiling on an inclination like the Andromeda Galaxy?

I would use the same 3x2 as your frame.

I just put a star ceiling up yesterday, it’s awesome!! My void was about 12mm for the strands.

hi woody - the existing ceiling is that far out of whack. the new one isnt. (or hopefully wont be once im done...)
miles easier just to lower height of ceiling a bit and screw some wood to the walls to make the new ceiling "joists" - ive got lots of head room, 2.5m ceilings. and its a bathroom. and im a short arse.

hi ian - did you manage to do it without taking the old ceiling off? im planning to do it from below - pre build everything (i.e. paint plasterboard, drill holes, put fibres through directly underneath where it is going, then lift it up and screw it to the new woodwork. then i dont have to get rid of the lath and plaster crap above it, it can just stay there.

have you got any tips for me or build piccies for the star ceiling?

To be honest i’d use Ply or mdf rather than plaster board.

I used 9mm mdf with fixing blacks/spacers every 400mm square (pre measured to hit the joists) so on a 3.15 x 1.53 ceiling I had 50 fixings.

This is how I made it and it screwed up under an existing (but bare) ceiling:

    3 sheets of MDF joined

    0.75mm stands through 300 1mm holes

I made Ursa Major out of 1mm strands but you can’t see it :cry:
