Hi

I've been asked to rewire an attempted replacement light fitting, but unfortunately no record of the original wiring was taken, so this is what I was confronted with. I'll try and be as descriptive as possible

A removed ceiling rose, so basically wire from the ceiling. There are 4 cables, all twin and earth. 12 wires in total. Using a meter I looked for the switched live and discovered 2. I tested each cable individually (flicking switches) and two buzzed. The other two do not.
There are two sets of lights in the same room involved in this little set up (connected by a double gang switch) Upon further testing it appears a light in an adjacent room is also connected. (with a single gang switch) With nothing connected none of the three light fittings work. As far as I can tell there is just a single switch for each light (not two way)
Does that make any sense to anyone ? and if so any help and advice would be appreciated ?
Cheers

Could they have used this method of wiring?

What do you think?

Put connectors on all ends, turn power on and find supply coming in.

Using your tester find cable/cables going to your 2 gang switch( how many tw/e at this switch?)

How many cables at your other light in this room?.

Eric, notwithstanding the fact that the OP said it was not two-way, may I respectfully point out that this type of diagram, whilst obviously technically correct, would mean absolutely nothing to a DIYer who has just been confronted with a dismantled ceiling rose.

The phrase "I have been asked" made me think he was an electrician. He details ringing out circuits as well which made me think he was skilled to some degree. I missed comment not two way so yes admit that will not help.

Hi

Apologies if I caused any confusion, i'm not an electrician, just a willing uncle ! (who happens to be cheap....ie free)

I'm off there after work today to track the two other wires to see which is the suppy as requested. i'll also check the cables in the adjoining room.
To answer Johnmelad, the other lights in the main room, connected by the 2 gang switch are wall lights.
Thanks for the interest guys and i'll get back to you later.
