I have a damp cellar and I would like to put a portable heater (short term).
Which type do I need i.e fan heater, oil heater etc.

oil heater will be quieter
 
surely a dehumidifier would do a better job, this is the sort of thing they are designed for.
 
Will it ever stop being damp? Why do you consider it is "damp" and that it could be "dry"? Water is coming from somewhere, and it may not be possible to stop it, and if you try you may have bigger problems. You may need a hydrologist.

Ventilation is the cure for most damp.

We have a ventilation problem which we'll rectify in due course, so the heater is a short term solution, will appreciate guidance.
 
By oil heater do you mean oil filled radiator :) or oil burning stove :cry: the latter releases loads of water...o.f.r. is cheaper than fan heater :!:
