cement or mortar or concrete?

okay thank you so i have the gerneral purpose cement purchased from b&q and i have some building sand also purchased from b&q what ratio should i do for just plastering the chimney wall. as the chimney wall was plastered before but the previous owner removed the plaster and now only bricks are showing but i have painted it in white color.

i know ratio is 4:1 sand and cement for general thing like brick layer but what should i do but plastering the chimney?
You really don't want to be (sand/cement) rendering an internal wall, especially one that has been painted.

PVA the wall and then either dab plasterboard to it and skim, or use an internal backing plaster-coat (thistle bonding coat, hardwall etc) and skim.

If it's clean and mixed with the right 'fines' then yes. Sounds like a right ball-ache when you can just as easily buy a bag of ballast.

Ask your cousin to post a query and start a thread.

Most likely the beam/wall knock out job wasn't applied for, or that it was enveloped under one bigger single application?

It needs to withstand the elements so usually a 3:1 ratio is used.

You have building sand, where as you would need plastering sand. rendering (Which is what you propose) doing isn't going to look good until you have a decent amount of practise.

@Stuckinarut thinks you want to do the outside of the chimney, but if it's inside, 1:5 would be OK. But... it will look rough without an experienced hand.

ok so i fi use cement and sand will it work and be smooth i will be careful applyoing it

Opinions vary, but although I can plaster patches and chases, I find a larger expanse easier with a sand and cement render. It has a much longer workable period.

It is not smooth enough to paint (except in a shed or garage) and needs a finish skim later.
