Central heating timer

The orange tabs round the dial turn the boiler ON and the grey/white ones turn the boiler off. You slide the tag round to the appropriate time.

The switches on the right allow you to override the set times.

ON means it keeps the CH/HW going continually - ignoring the tabs.

ONCE means it turns the CH/HW ON at the first tab and OFF at the last - ignoring tabs 2 and 3.

TWICE means the CH/HW is turned ON at Tab 1, OFF at Tab 2, ON at Tab 3 and OFF at tab 4.

OFF means the CH/HW stays OFF all the time.

Thanks this is now crystal clear although...

I have a separate electric boiler in the loft for the hot water and i do not want to use the gas boiler for it but just for the central heating. I assune I will have to move the "hot water" switch to "off" at all times, is this correct?

If I turn off the electric boiler in the loft would i have hot water by turning on the HW switch and if so I will always have hot water and heating at the same time I establish by the timer. Is this correct?

Thanks so much for your help.

Are you sure it's an electric boiler in the loft and not an unvented HW cylinder? How many pipes connect to it? A Pic would be helpful.

That depends on what the "boiler" in the loft actually is. The pic will help identify it.

If you have a choice between gas and electric, use the gas. It is far cheaper.

Normally the electric option is only there for when the boiler breaks.

The black tank behing the supposed boiler is the feeder tank for the heating system which I have now drained

That's not a "boiler" it's a hot water cylinder. The thing at the top with a cable going to it is an immersion heater. You normally only need to turn this on if something has gone wrong with the boiler.

The thing half way up the side of the cylinder (first pic) with a cable going to it is a hot water thermostat. This turns the boiler on and off to keep the water in the cylinder at the correct temperature.

I can see one open tank next to the cylinder. There should be a second, larger, tank higher up, above the cylinder.
