CH60SS motor - Start up fail

Evening all,

My kitchen hood extractor fan stop working and i purchased a new motor. The motor however wont start when it is wired into the connector block.. There is a continuity in the wiring but i think it is to do with the wiring : (

Could someone please shine a light upon me, as i completely oblivious when it comes to motor wiring.

What do you mean won't start? Does it hum but not move? How was it wired before? The poor quality switches fail more often than the motors.

Did you not copy how the old motor was wired?
Looks like it has the extra leads for the different speeds, plus, the capacitor if not wired correctly will prevent it starting.

Freddo and Fender, cheers for your reply. The wiring was done accordingly. I am assuming the switches has failed because motor is brand spanking new..
The extra leads are for the speed of the motor as well, i just need to get the wiring correct.. Also when wired directly from the mains, the motor hums as Fredo mentioned, What could cause this?

You need the windings connected the correct way around and most likely more than one winding powered at the same time, likely with a capacitor in series with one of the windings. If you wired it exactly as the old one the fault must be elsewhere. I can't work out form your post if you know the wiring order? Is there not a wiring diagram stuck to the inside of the hood? If you don't remember where the wires went it will be very difficult to work it out without some sort of diagram.

When you say directly from the mains how are you connecting it?

The only other way is to note the make / model of the motor and get a wiring diagram. You can work out how to wire these using a multimeter on the wires to work out what's what as well.

Connecting it main from 240v supply using 13A fuse inside, i connected Brown to Live and Blue to Neutral.. The motor smoked shortly after.. i immediately thought the wiring was wrong and haven't plugged it since. Some say after the motor smoke, you can also never get it to work?

On the 2nd pic, why is the blue not connected?

I will get a better pic of the the whole wiring later today. The purple cable is feeding mains to the switch.. I unplugged it to identify whether the fault was with the wiring or the switch. Using small cable i connected the purple and fed one end of small cable to with the purple in the connector block and the other with the slow speed cable.

If it smoked, you've overheated / burn't the shellac on the windings, so it may be duff now.
You can never assume colour codes on the leads. I've seen some very odd colour codings over the years, and it's not wired how you may think.

If I HAD to guess and go by a common(ish) pattern.
I'd say:
Red - low speed
Blue - medium
Black - high
White - common / N

Whatever two colours are left, connect to the capacitor.

No, been very busy lately with other bits and bops. I have however ordered a new switch because dismantled my old one.

As soon as the switch gets delivered, i will have a go at wiring it..

I replaced the switch and it worked like a charm.. new motor, capacitor and new switch.. it works like charm now.. Thanks for all your input guys..
