chair restoration

I have some nice chairs which need re-upholstering and that's fine. But they could do with the back legs being a bit firmer .. they are just a bit squeaky and move slightly.

The back of each chair and the back legs are all one piece, which is set into the seat frame sections. There are no screws anywhere, but shaped blocks set into grooves (and glued, I think).

I am an amateur but would like to do a reasonably good job. I have no specialist tools, any suggestions would be gratefully received, .. thanks.

seen the bloke on new yankee workshop do it.

he took table (i think it was) apart, cleaned it all up, made newparts for the damaged worn bits then put it back togeteher, then knackered it.

ok yo need to dissasemble your loose component parts with due regards to nails or dowels holding the components together

with modern furniture sometimes all you have is screwed in components sometimes with glue

if the furniture is old youll have old fashioned boiled glue that needs warmed and removed
if its modern furniture and the joint is worn loose by by being used long after it has become loose youll need an expanding glue like gorrila glue


but in all cases the old glue must be removed back to bare wood
if the gap is less than 1mm pva can be used
if its greater than 1mm expanding glue should be used and old dowels nails or screws replaced with a tight fitting replacement

I have used this product in the past for a customer of mine who wanted a very old chair restoring as it was very unstable.

The glue is finely injected into the joints and expands the wood fibres making the joint firm again, believe me it works so well. You get the syringe with the glue in three sizes.
