Hi,
We have some aluminium window frames all around the house which the previous owner had put in, not sure how long ago but we have been living there for 10 years.

The problem I have is that one of the safety handles which closes the window in the bathroom has broken. The actual handle has come away from the device (think these are glued on). Now there are 2 in the bathroom and they are not key locks or anything like that, just normal handles. I am pretty sure the device which the handle has come away from is screwed onto the frame using something kind of allen key but not 100% sure because over time it has corroded so difficult to tell.

How do I go about changing the whole device with handle. It is not possible to glue the handle back plus anyway it will come away again at a later date. I need a new device, does anyone know who specialises in these kind of safety devices?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Not sure when you mean safely handle, are they just a double glazed normal handle ? They normally have a plate cover over the screws, just prise it off and put in a slightly bigger self-tapping screws.
See this to help you.
A photo of your window handle would help us.

Thanks for the reply.
Some photos to help explain my problem better.
Any advice welcome.

Lak,

The windows are self sealed units.
Is the condensation in between the two pains? - in which case you need new units (not windows, just the units).
If the condensation is on the outside. i.e. in the room itself, then you just have a ventilation problem. The cheapest route is a condensor. The proper route is adequate ventilation in the window frames.

Hope this helps.

Neil,
Thanks for the post but the problem is not with the windows itself but with the opening handles. As you can see from the photos, one handle is broken and I wanted to know where to get another from and how to open the device which the handle fits onto. The handle has snapped off and the device is still on the window. I cant see whether its screwd on or what.

Thanks,

Oh dear, look like they use blind rivets or pot rivets ! You use a rivet gun then the steel pin snapped off so you see like a washer finish, see picture

The only way is to drill it out with a small metal drill bit then the end of the rivets will fall inside the window casing frame and don't worry about that bit. Then get the right size countersunk self tapping screws.

This is a novel method of combating condensation .. by gentle pressurisation of the home, effectively reversing draughts !!
I have not experienced it myself, but an old workmate - at the end of his tether with condensation in his self built bungalow - had a unit fitted, many years ago, yes the product has survived many years, hopefully that says something for its functionality.
My friend was 'over the moon' and his condensation problems diminished, then went away, the unit remains in use ... Have a read here about :- http://www.freshnuaire.co.uk/therange.htm

And similar if not the same from Xpelair, EverDri under Condensation Control Fan Range at http://www.applied-energy.com/xpelair/products/
And they say, among other stuff :-
Eradicates virtually all condensation problems.
Prevents mould forming on walls and window frames
Eliminates streaming windows
I suggest that Xpelair are no fly by night company given to making false claims !!

Hi Guys,
thanks for all the replies but still not sure my query has been answered. In Pic 1/2/3 you can see the handle fixed. Pic 4 shows handle broken and it is the unit which is left on the frame after handle broken which is the problem i have because I cannot open it to put on a new device complete with handle etc.

Ahh, I think I got what you mean ! This is a tricky one and can be done but really a locksmith job. Normally the dg unit have to come out then we unhook it from by pre-drilling the hole from the top in which you have to know where to drill this hole. The wire goes into the hole then unhook the lock, its not going to be easy.
